Winning a contest through a small group activity in my department
I was a very active student in my department during college. I enrolled in the Department of Economics and participated most actively in small groups with my seniors within the department rather than other club activities. Seniors and juniors with common interests got together to form study groups to study their majors in greater depth, and through these groups, we were able to obtain study guides for school exams and even prepare for contests held by various companies.
In particular, when I was a sophomore, five of us, two seniors and two juniors, participated in a college student marketing IDEA contest where we were given two topics and could choose one to participate in. Our team chose the topic of researching and proposing ways to increase regular customers as Hyundai Bank customers, and submitted an idea proposal for the contest.
The five of us held several meetings to brainstorm ideas, organized our detailed ideas on how to increase regular customers at gas stations, and based on that, we created a neat PowerPoint presentation that would catch people’s attention. This experience not only gave me a new perspective on gas stations, which I had not paid much attention to before, but we also won an honorable mention and were featured in the school newspaper.
Student Council President and Volunteer Work
As I majored in economics, which is an excellent academic field closely related to real life, I thought that economics was the best major for finding employment in various fields. The deeper I delved into my major, the more I became aware of new realities that I had not known before.
While preparing for TOEIC and computer certifications, I studied intensively to obtain certifications related to my major before graduating from university, and my efforts paid off in the form of certifications.
During my college years, I volunteered to deliver meals to elderly people living alone. My parents taught me to respect the elderly, so when I had the opportunity to volunteer, I didn’t hesitate to choose to help the elderly.
I thought that meal delivery was the most necessary help for elderly people living alone in the city with difficult livelihoods, as meals were their biggest problem. At first, I just thought I was helping the elderly ladies, but as I visited them once a week, I learned about life from them.
After completing my military service, I returned to university as a third-year student and became the student council president of my department. I developed a proactive attitude and leadership skills. In addition, through working with many classmates from different backgrounds, I was able to develop the ability to easily adapt to different cultures and build friendships. I was always praised by my department head and teaching assistant for my accurate and reliable work.
Burning my youth through a national expedition
In order to gain various experiences during college, I participated in the “National Trek” event hosted by ○○. I envied my older brother, who had participated in the National Trek when he was in high school, for his tanned face and mature appearance, so I applied for the event as soon as I heard about it. This experience was a time when I could burn my youth. Through the arduous journey of walking and walking, I learned how to overcome myself, and I gained the courage to endure difficult situations and overcome challenges. Above all, my friends who were with me during those difficult times were a great source of strength. Perhaps it was because our friendship was forged in difficult circumstances. I still keep in touch with my friends from that time and reminisce about our experiences.
I had a team project assignment in a liberal arts class. Perhaps because it was a liberal arts class, there were students from a wide variety of majors. At first, I thought it would be better to do more specialized research with students from the same department rather than with students from different departments. However, the professor organized groups so that students from different departments could work together. While working on the project, I realized the importance of multifaceted thinking, which my parents had emphasized since I was a child. I was surprised to find that even the same problem could be viewed from different perspectives depending on one’s major. Through this experience, I deeply realized the importance of convergent thinking and paradigm shifts. I will never forget this realization and will strive to achieve the best results through creative thinking in my work.
Taking on various leadership roles with determination and sincerity
I inherited my father’s determination and sincerity in always quietly doing his work. So, unlike other students who wanted to stand out and do many things, I wanted to do one thing well. That is why I always did my best in everything I was assigned to do in middle and high school. When I entered university, I continued to focus on my studies with sincerity as my core virtue. However, I did not just study silently during my college years. First, I decided that it was time to show my leadership qualities, so I ran for class representative. I became class representative and carried out my duties transparently and thoroughly. I provided generous support for various academic activities and decided on themes for MTs to ensure that they were in line with their purpose. It is difficult to satisfy all students in a department, but most were satisfied, and I served as class representative for one year. I also worked part-time to become a more resourceful person. Understanding that my father had a difficult job, I took a day labor job where I could demonstrate my abilities as a man. Through this job, I was able to understand the overall framework and detailed structure of construction. In this way, I naturally developed a strong sense of responsibility by faithfully performing my duties. In addition, my sense of responsibility enabled me to work smoothly with my colleagues and achieve higher results.
I participated in a project at my professor’s research institute
I participated in a project at my advisor’s research institute. At the time, I was pursuing a master’s degree, and my professor made me an unprecedented offer. My professor, who is an authority in his field, is known for being very selective when hiring researchers. In fact, researchers working on projects with the professor were required to have at least a doctoral degree. The professor, who had been watching me since my undergraduate days, offered me a position to work on a project at the research institute, and I was able to learn a lot from participating in the research there. As it was a joint project with a university research institute in the United States, I conducted research with American professors and researchers. Through this experience, I realized the importance of English. I had always thought that my English was good enough, but I realized that I had limitations in communicating my research freely. This motivated me to study English more intensively. As a researcher, I believe that it is important to not only conduct research but also to be able to communicate the results in a way that is easy for others to understand.
A cooperative and thoughtful person
This is what was written on my report card in junior high school. My teacher wrote it when I was in the third year of junior high school. At that time, my teacher and my class had a very special relationship. However, my teacher was in poor health and was often absent from school. The vice principal came to see me and said that my teacher would have to be absent from school frequently, and asked if I wanted to change teachers so that another teacher could take over the class. I was the class president at the time, so I asked the vice principal to give me some time to think about it. Then, I held a class meeting. I think we took it more seriously than any other meeting I had ever held. I stepped forward and shared my thoughts about the teacher, and then we gathered opinions on what to do if he were to be replaced and what to do if he stayed. Naturally, my classmates loved our teacher very much and wanted to spend the year with him. After listening to the students, I made a plan with the vice president. Looking back, I think that was the first time I ever made a strategy.
First, we wrote down our teacher’s daily schedule. We wrote down what he did in the morning, what he did during lunch and dinner, cleaning, and even his work reports and lesson plans. Then, we found things that we could do on our own as much as possible. We thought that it was important to create a good atmosphere in the classroom and keep it clean, so we voluntarily created a duty roster. We decided to take turns informing the teacher of the work written in the work log with the class president, vice president, secretary, and general affairs officer. We reported this to the vice principal, who gave us permission. Our class spent a year without a change of homeroom teacher, and we developed a very special relationship during that time.
That experience made me realize that strategizing is the way to help people. I realized that it is extremely important to create guidelines for working together when you want to protect something truly valuable or achieve something you desire.
Starting marketing to promote myself
When I became a university student, I enrolled in the Department of Business Administration and was strongly attracted to the subject of marketing. This was because I thought that in modern society, where products of an appropriate level are produced, marketing is what determines which products will stand out. Marketing also includes effectively communicating new products that can be fully utilized to people. I thought it was like a tool that could give new life to any commodity or product. That’s why I became so absorbed in my marketing classes, and since I was studying marketing, I decided to put it to practical use. I set myself the goal of becoming student council president and worked on it like a project, thinking of marketing myself as my first task as a marketer. I joined various clubs, from a tea club to a mountain climbing club, made a name for myself, and participated in various activities. I also delved into school issues and tried to understand and participate in the process of solving them. As a result, I was selected as a candidate in my third year and was able to serve as student council president. In that position, I worked to promote and utilize various welfare policies at the school, and I learned how to coordinate various interests in a space that was like a small society. It was hard work, but I think I had a more meaningful college life than anyone else.
Learning how to get along with others
When I was young, I was greedy and tried to do everything on my own. I wanted to be number one in my class and number one in sports. I worked hard to achieve my goals, and my study methods worked well until elementary school. However, everything changed when I entered junior high school. I started to struggle with some subjects, and there were many times when I had to work as part of a team to get my schoolwork done. I realized that studying alone was exhausting, but working together created synergy. I learned this while preparing for a cheerleading competition in my second year of junior high school. I was the class president at the time, and my class was hopeless. No one tried hard, and they were always tired and irritable. However, three friends helped me get motivated, and the class completely changed. We encouraged each other, and one by one, ideas started to come out. Before we knew it, we were staying up late to practice dancing. As a result, we came in first place in our school and second place in our city. That experience, and the tears I shed at that time, taught me that there are so many things we can achieve when we help each other. It made me realize that we can do anything better when we work together, and that we can grow as individuals while creating happy and fun memories.
Developing a sense of responsibility as a member of the student council
My teacher saw that I was good at leading people and had a responsible personality, so he asked me to be the head of the student council in high school. At first, I wondered if I could do it, but my teacher asked me earnestly, so I decided to give it a try. At first, I was tired because I had to go to school earlier than everyone else and stay late, but once I started, I decided to see it through to the end, so I helped my teacher every day without slacking off. As a result, a new culture naturally took root at the school, and my friends began to take better care of their uniforms. My activities as a student council president also gave me the opportunity to build strong friendships with my teammates. Through these activities, I learned that it is important to get along with people, but it is also important to take care of them, and I gained a sense of how to work as a group. Even after entering university, I exercised my unique sense of responsibility and became the festival director, taking charge of the school festival. My most memorable achievement was when I managed to book the most expensive singer at the time. After mobilizing all my acquaintances and continuing negotiations, I was able to secure the singer for the price I had offered, and we had a festival that everyone enjoyed. It was a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Creating a united class and promoting harmony
In middle and high school, I was the class president and set a goal to create a class with good unity. I believed that a good class atmosphere would create synergy and improve everyone’s grades. To carry out this project, I listened to my friends’ opinions. By listening to a variety of opinions, good ideas can emerge. I also created a forum for my classmates to share their concerns, and I came up with ideas to help them as much as I could. My class carried out a project called “Wake Up Your Neighbor.” There are times when you fall asleep in class regardless of your intentions. The project involved waking up those friends. We also planned to provide learning mentoring so that friends who were good at certain subjects could help those who were falling behind. The fact that everyone was committed to creating harmony in the class helped to achieve that goal. We were able to accept the difficulties we encountered during the project by discussing them, and we became closer by listening to each other’s personal concerns and trying to find solutions together. This spirit of harmony continued into college.
I joined a psychological counseling club and learned counseling techniques. The club did a lot of volunteer work, especially at nursing homes. I felt very proud when I saw how happy the elderly residents were just by talking to them. I believe that helping others is very important for creating a healthy society. This experience also made me realize the importance of communication with others, as it can alleviate conflicts between generations and lead to integration.
