What kind of story should new designers include in their cover letters?

In this blog post, we will discuss how new designers can effectively express their stories, sensibilities, and experiences in their cover letters.

Growing up

When I was a child, I often visited art museums with my parents. My parents were art collectors and had a deep appreciation for art. While viewing artworks at museums, I developed a dream of becoming a designer who works with people. Once, I was invited by my mother’s acquaintance to attend a fashion show. There, I fell in love with design. It was the power of design that made the gorgeous models and lighting stand out even more. That experience strengthened my determination to create works that would enchant viewers. Thanks to my parents, I had access to many books related to art and design. One wall of my study was filled with professional books, and there were so many books in my house. In addition to those books, I studied current trends by looking at design materials from Korea and abroad to understand the trends. I also often participated in various seminars and exhibitions, which made me realize the importance of foreign languages and motivated me to study English hard. While attending an academy where I could study design professionally, I also organized a study group with like-minded friends. Believing that creativity is important in design, I developed the habit of writing down my ideas whenever they came to mind. This is because if I didn’t write down my ideas immediately, I would forget them later. I think the scope of design is very broad. After I decided to become a designer, I tried to design my life. I believe that my efforts to design a beautiful life have shaped who I am today. I want to be a talented designer with creative and open thinking.

School days

During my childhood, I often visited exhibition halls rather than hanging out with friends. As a result, when I entered elementary school, I became closer to books than to my friends, but when I entered junior high school, I decided that I needed to get better grades, so I joined various clubs. In high school, I won many awards in various design contests related to my dream, and I was admitted to a special program for students with special talents. Overconfident in my design abilities, I think I worked less hard than my classmates. I was shocked when I saw my poor grades in the midterm exams. I realized that what I should be most wary of and afraid of is excessive self-confidence. I reflected on my mistakes. I thought that my complacency was the cause of my poor results, so I worked hard to refocus my mind. I believe that this experience taught me a valuable lesson. With this as a lesson, I am now working hard on my creative work with a never-give-up attitude. I won the grand prize in the next character contest I participated in. I remember struggling a lot because I couldn’t come up with any good ideas after deciding to participate. I also remember trying my best not to repeat my past mistakes. I was obsessed with coming up with new ideas, and the more I tried, the more my mind became cluttered. I decided to take a step back and review classic design books. This is because creative ideas do not come suddenly, but rather arise from the sudden fusion of knowledge gained through various channels. I found a hint in a book, came up with a fusion of ideas, and started creating characters. I believe that design is born from the writer’s worries and struggles. I will pour my heart into each and every piece of work.

Strengths and weaknesses

After junior high school, my personality changed significantly, and I became more easygoing and well-rounded, which has helped me make many friends. I am sociable and can easily strike up a conversation with strangers. Talking with a wide variety of friends is a great advantage for me. This is because I can get ideas from many different sources. I think that if you are biased toward only one field, you will end up producing narrow-minded ideas. In that sense, I think that getting various ideas from various people is very helpful in creating something new. In addition, perhaps because I am interested in many things, I have a keen eye. I have a talent for grasping everything at a glance. I think my keen observation skills allow me to notice unique characteristics even when I pass by something quickly. I wasn’t born with this talent. However, believing that I can get ideas from everything in this world, I developed the habit of looking at things very carefully. The next step was to train myself to identify the characteristics of the things I had experienced, and the final step was to train myself to catch them quickly. I think this repetitive training helped me develop my keen observation skills.
On the other hand, I have a weakness for remembering the names of things. I have a good memory for faces, but I forget names very quickly. I think names are very important for people because they form their identity. I often feel disappointed when someone does not remember my name. To reduce the number of times I make this mistake, I write down names and their characteristics. I am unique in that I remember people by their characteristics rather than their names, but I am continuing to make an effort to remember people’s names by writing them down.

Career (experience)

At the first design company I worked for, I was in charge of comprehensive design work. It was not a company that specialized in one field of design, but rather a place that handled a wide range of designs, including advertising, graphics, and products. It was also a place where I could learn a lot about my work. The wider the range of designs I handled, the more I had to learn in order to acquire those skills. Later, I worked in the studio of a teacher I respected. He was a designer I had always admired, and I was fascinated by his unique way of working, so when I happened to get the opportunity, I jumped at it. Working with him gave me a deeper understanding of his work. It also helped me to persevere in my design work without getting discouraged. My teacher took an interest in my designs and gave me opportunities to take on projects that I could work on entirely on my own.

Motivation and aspirations

George S. Patton once said, “Take the challenge. You may find the sweet taste of victory.” I believe that I have gained a lot of experience in the world of design, which I have always admired. And I have found another path that I want to follow. That is to become the driving force behind LG CNS’s future and the best medium for conveying the message that LG CNS wants to convey to its customers. I want to communicate and interact with customers through my designs and become someone who brings the future to the company. I also want to contribute to the achievement of the company’s vision as a passionate talent. I have long aspired to become a designer and dreamed of becoming the best. Many people want to be the best, but only a few can achieve it, which is why everyone dreams of becoming the best. I pursue designs that everyone can relate to. I believe that art is meaningless if it does not evoke empathy. Therefore, I am confident that I can do well at your company, which prefers designs that allow viewers to give meaning to them. In order to become a talented designer at your company, I am constantly striving to understand and predict design trends. After joining your company, I will not only strive to become an expert in my field, but also actively work to create synergy through cooperation with my colleagues. Please give me the opportunity to contribute to the growth of your company by demonstrating my best abilities.
