What kind of experience other than your major is important in an administrative job application letter?

In this blog post, we will introduce specific examples of how experience other than your major can be a distinguishing strength when writing an administrative job application letter.

Growth

“Learning the value of sincerity from my parents.”
My father worked at a public corporation in the energy sector for over 20 years and always worked with a sincere attitude. Seeing my father like that, I thought it was cool to work steadily in one field. So, I decided that I wanted to become a person who works steadily in one field with a sincere attitude. The first thing that came to mind was becoming a civil servant. There are many types of civil servants, but I decided that I wanted to become an administrator.
So, I began preparing for college entrance exams by attending classes diligently and maintaining good grades. In middle school, I studied as much as everyone else, but when I entered high school, I decided to work harder than everyone else. This was because, even though the path to becoming an administrator seemed smooth, I thought there would be more competition than in other fields. So, I always tried to see one more thing and memorize one more thing than my friends. I focused on my internal grades and, in my senior year of high school, I was able to enter the Department of Public Administration at Korea University.
Even after entering university, I tried to be a diligent student. Usually, college students become lax and don’t study hard, but I believed that the meaning of attending university was to do the work assigned to me well. In particular, to become a civil servant, I had to pass an exam and prepare for personality and aptitude tests, so I tried not to neglect my studies. I studied administrative science, organizational science, and behavioral psychology, focusing on introductory texts. I also prepared for the future by looking at civil service exam and aptitude test papers. In addition, I had the opportunity to interact with friends who had the same goals and share information while studying for interviews.

Strengths and weaknesses

“Quiet and sincere personality”
If I were to rank people according to their personality, I think I would be at the bottom of the list. I tend to quietly do my work rather than express my individuality, and personality tests usually show that I am a conventional person. I am not bored by doing the same thing every day and following the same schedule every day; rather, I am a person who finds satisfaction in such a life. Of course, I also have hobbies and enjoy cultural activities for fun and excitement, but I place more importance on everyday activities.
A quiet and sincere attitude is fundamental to all work, but I believe it is the most important virtue for a civil servant. Due to the nature of administrative work, which involves repeating the same tasks and performing the most basic office duties, I believe that a sincere attitude is the most important quality. Therefore, I have strived to cultivate this attitude and have always managed myself to be someone who quietly gets the job done, no matter where I am. My usual self-management habits include getting up early every morning to stretch, reading at least one book a month, and ending the day with exercise before going to bed. These habits may seem insignificant, but they are actually very important parts of my daily routine.
If I have a weakness, it would be that I am not very good at communicating with people around me. In my heart, I want to interact with many people and become friends with them, but when the opportunity arises, I just focus on doing my job well. No matter how hard I try to maintain relationships, it takes time and money, and I can’t help but worry about it. However, rather than thinking about that, I now believe that meeting and interacting with various people gives me indirect life experiences and lessons, so I am determined to communicate with a positive attitude rather than a negative one.

Special characteristics

“Activities that contribute to the well-being of the family”
While majoring in social welfare at university, I became particularly interested in family welfare and child welfare. Families are the building blocks of our society. Families also influence the atmosphere of society as a whole, and couples and children are essential members of families. That is why I have been involved in family counseling programs since I was a university student in order to engage in welfare activities for children. The family counseling program is a program in which children and their parents participate together at the beginning of the spring semester, and through counseling, they learn to understand each other’s feelings.
At first, college student mentors lead the counseling and explain the process to the families, but when the counseling activities begin in earnest, the families participate in activities together. We also planned activities where mothers and fathers take on the roles of siblings, and children take on the roles of parents. We also organized an experience course for children to go to their parents’ workplaces and try doing their jobs, as well as an experience course for parents to go to schools and try studying. Through these counseling booths and courses, we helped each family understand each other better, and the program won an award at a welfare program contest.

Motivation

“An administrative expert who promotes the value of health insurance”
While majoring in social welfare, I ran an interview study group for employment within my department. In the course of running the study group, the members shared employment information with each other, and based on that information, we ranked the most popular companies. There were several companies that were most popular among applicants, but among public corporations, the National Health Insurance Service ranked first. The reason was that it was a company with a purpose that combined health, social welfare, and family welfare, and it was responsible for part of the national project.
I preferred working for a public corporation or public institution rather than a private company. The reason is that I think I am a quiet person who is suited to performing routine tasks. I also thought that a public institution would be a good place to learn administrative work, which is why I applied to your company. Based on your job posting, I understand that you mainly look at the characteristics of the applicant’s major and their activities in college when hiring new employees. I believe that my major is relevant to the objectives of your company, and during my time at university, I led welfare events for families as part of a family counseling program. In addition, I have gained experience by participating in various welfare contests and social activities, as well as by scrapbooking articles related to various aspects of the social welfare system.
Based on these characteristics, if I am given the opportunity to work at your company, I would like to become an employee who promotes the value of welfare to society and helps to realize it. This is the purpose and direction of your company, so I will work as an employee who prioritizes the direction of the organization. In addition, I will do my best to promote the value of health insurance, which is the focus of your company’s work, to the outside world and to demonstrate my professional capabilities in the field of public relations and administration. As a new employee, I still have a lot to learn beyond my major, and I will approach my work with a willingness to learn, taking this into consideration. Finally, I will work with a humble attitude, prioritizing the atmosphere of the organization and striving to adapt to it.
