How to Highlight Technical Knowledge in a Medical Device Company Personal Statement

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to effectively incorporate your technical knowledge and field experience into your personal statement when applying for a job in the medical device field.

Growing up

I’ve always wanted to wear glasses since I was a kid. My family didn’t wear glasses because everyone in my family had good eyes. When I entered elementary school, I noticed that my friends who wore glasses were exceptionally good at studying, and I think it was because everyone who studied well on TV wore glasses. It seems silly now, but I did reckless things like reading a book or watching TV close up with the lights off because I wanted to wear glasses. Seeing this behavior, my mother took me to the optician and bought me a pair of glasses. Of course, they were prescription glasses, and I was so happy to wear them that day. I remember being so excited to go to school and show them off. But when I put them on, I realized they were uncomfortable. My glasses would slip off, sweat would collect around them in the summer, and in the winter I would have to take them off to clean them when I went indoors. I stopped wearing glasses after about a year. I realized how precious eyes are in life, and even though I was young, I still feel embarrassed when I think of all the things I did to neglect them.

When I was an undergraduate

majoring in optical science, my professor took the initiative to take us to Cambodia for a month-long volunteer program, which he does every year. When we went to Cambodia, we realized that the situation was even worse than what we had seen on TV. With the support of a company, we borrowed equipment and checked the condition of Cambodians’ eyes. One little boy had a huge difference in vision between his right and left eyes, and if left untreated, both eyes were expected to deteriorate. I was so heartbroken that I called home and asked for glasses to be sent to match his vision. It was heartwarming to see him wearing and loving his glasses. During the month-long volunteer program, we not only did eye exams, but also helped rebuild houses and schools. It made me reflect on how happy I am and how I used to complain about my life, even though I have a very happy life compared to them. Sometimes we would spend three to four days in the heat of the day repairing houses, but I knew that every drop of sweat was worth it, so I pushed through. Volunteering in Cambodia made me feel proud that my knowledge could be of use to someone, and it made me want to further develop my skills to help people’s eye health.

Personality strengths and weaknesses

Thorough planning is a great strength of mine. I believe that everyone is given 24 hours in a day, and I believe that success is determined by how well you plan your day, so I have made it a habit to always organize my tasks for the day before I start my day. I believe that it is important not only to plan, but also to execute, so I make checklists to see if I have done what I need to do for the day, and if not at the end of the day, how far I have come. It also keeps me accountable for doing what I’ve planned to do. I’m a big fan of overplanning, because it forces me to plan as much as I can and then punish myself when I don’t stick to it.
On the other hand, I’m a bit of a worrier, and I worry a lot before I do things, so I think about what if I fail and have a plan B. This can be an advantage in terms of being thorough, but it can also be a disadvantage in terms of not being able to take risks, so I try to think positively. I’m trying to think about what if I fail, but also what if I succeed, and I’m trying to be bold. Through these efforts, I have been able to take a cautious approach to my work, but also to plan and pursue things much more boldly than before, which I think will help me do a great job at your company.

Work experience (or something that demonstrates your ability to do the job)

I worked at ○○ Eye Specialty Hospital, where I was in charge of checking patients’ eyesight and examining eye diseases. I also participated in health education programs at nearby schools, checking students’ eye conditions and teaching them how to take care of their eyes and how to wear glasses correctly. I was surprised by how many students wore glasses. I felt sad that many of my friends would not need to wear glasses if they took care of their eyes. I believe that this work-related experience will be of great help to me in my work with your company’s ophthalmic medical equipment.

Motivation and aspirations

Now that I am applying to your company, I am very excited that this could be the first step in realizing my goal of being responsible for the “eye health of mankind.” I believe that contributing to the happiness of many people is very rewarding for anyone. I know that your company’s management goals are also ○○○○○. I applied because I believe there is a synergy between personal and corporate goals.
If I become a member of ○○, I will do my best to be recognized as a competent talent based on my thorough planning and preparation. After joining the company, I will diligently participate in in-house professional education and training, as well as make efforts to strengthen my personal capabilities so that I can grow quickly. I will also contribute to improving my work performance through exchanges with colleagues. I promise to do my best to help your company become a world-class company.
