I have been very tall since I was a child. I started to exceed 170 cm in elementary school, and by the time I was in junior high school, I was tall enough to be mistaken for an adult wherever I went. As a result, I was naturally recruited to the basketball club at school, and I always led my team to victory when competing with my peers. When I became a high school student, I started to consider joining a professional basketball club instead of the school basketball club. So I went to a high school famous for its basketball team and joined the sports club.
Our high school’s amateur basketball team was well known in the area. It had won many awards and was recognized nationwide, which made me even more proud to play for the team. I was still taller than my peers, and I worked on my physical fitness while managing my health, which improved my athletic ability. As a result, I was known as the ace of the team. However, simply being tall was not enough to become a professional player. When I was considering going to college, I thought about other related majors due to my lack of skills and abilities.
I thought about physical education, as I believed that my physical condition and interest in sports would enable me to become a good educator. While in college, I continued to play for the school basketball team and achieved good results in amateur leagues, never losing my passion for basketball. At college, I took classes related to business administration and marketing, as interdisciplinary studies were popular at the time. After taking those classes, I came up with the idea of studying marketing further and applying it to sports. So, I minored in marketing in graduate school and considered the field of sports marketing. I was recognized as an outstanding researcher by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity and was selected for an overseas training project.
Overcoming setbacks

To be honest, I didn’t think sports marketing was my path from the beginning. I majored in physical education, but I had a hard time switching to marketing. I was confident in ball sports such as basketball and volleyball. I was recognized for my athletic ability and played on the amateur basketball team and the university volleyball team. However, my back, which had been bad since I was a child, worsened in high school, and I was unable to do strenuous exercise.
I could still play basketball and volleyball, but I couldn’t play enough to make it a career. So, to overcome my frustration, I looked for a new major in the field of sports. With the growing popularity of sports these days, I thought I could achieve even more than my original dream by entering the new field of sports marketing. Just as I decided to go to graduate school, a sports marketing department was established at my university, and I became the first student to study marketing there. Even when faced with challenges that others would consider difficult, I never hesitate and always strive toward new goals with a positive and enterprising attitude. No matter what obstacles I encounter in the future, I will never give up and will always find a way to overcome them.

After studying sports and marketing in graduate school, I wrote my thesis on case studies in sports marketing during my final semester. My thesis was well received in the field, and I was hired by the sports business team of an advertising planning company. When I first joined the company, I worked as a researcher, proposing marketing strategies. In particular, as it was in the sports field, I proposed strategies for discovering new sports brands and enhancing brand image.
For example, there was a sports brand that sold outdoor products, sneakers, and climbing products. This brand had a firmly established image, which made it difficult to compete with other brands. In particular, there were many complaints that the designs were not trendy, so our planning agency held numerous meetings to improve this aspect and create a new position for the brand. As a result of our careful consideration of various aspects, from improving value to selecting new target groups, the project was a success.
In particular, we did not stop at simply creating advertisements, improving strategies, and applying images. While a typical advertising agency would have stopped there, we needed to go one step further to make our process more competitive. Therefore, we introduced an integrated promotion system with the aim of providing a one-stop service for advertisers, including casting models, filming, and producing a series of advertisements.
