How can you show your passion and responsibility for architecture in your cover letter?

In this blog post, we’ll talk about how people applying for jobs in architecture can effectively show their passion and responsibility in their cover letters.

Growing up

Since ancient times, humans have strived to protect their fragile bodies and live together in harmony by pioneering the harsh world, building adequate housing, and ensuring a smooth life. In the past, when humans had no systems or external defenses to protect their weak bodies and had to fight other creatures in the wild, there were countless uncertainties that prevented people from living their lives to the fullest. However, as humans formed groups and gradually conquered the creatures around them and the natural environment, they were able to build civilizations that preserved and facilitated the lives of many. This created a foundation that allowed people to strive not only for survival, but also for various other values in life, which led to abundant development.
The establishment of a living environment, which was a prerequisite for the full blossoming of human development, was the most intriguing factor for me, who was deeply interested in the history and development of humankind. Even in our highly civilized society, humans are still very fragile, and accidents and deaths that are incompatible with our level of development can happen at any time. I was fascinated by the events that led to the dawn of civilization, which gave humans, who in the past had no choice but to die, the opportunity to live rich lives. Starting with making a house for my dog at home, I enjoyed building sand castles and assembling model buildings, and the sense of accomplishment I felt from these activities fueled my desire to build buildings that could actually function. I wanted to play a part in the system that had enabled humanity to take such a leap forward.

School life

I was interested in various buildings and residential environments, and whenever I traveled far from home, I would spend hours intently studying the unusual designs of buildings and residential systems that I had never seen before. Whenever I visited distant relatives with my parents, went on field trips, or participated in experiential learning, I was struck not only by the rich natural landscape, but also by the residential areas that existed in harmony with it. Some places were in perfect harmony with their surroundings, while others were completely dominated by human civilization, giving off an overwhelming impression. It was interesting to see how the character of each place differed depending on where people lived.
This experience strengthened my dream of becoming a part of creating such diverse environments and moving forward together. I am not simply pursuing a career in architecture as a means to live a comfortable life, but because I want to contribute to the creation of a system of living spaces that has more meaning than just a place to lay one’s body, serving as a stepping stone for the development of humanity and a shield for humans who still cannot completely overcome their innate nature. From the first buildings, which were made by weaving tree branches and leaves to protect and rest the body, to today’s highly developed architectural environment, I wanted to devote myself to continuing this tradition.

Strengths and weaknesses

I am aware that most of the things I enjoy today are the result of past developments, and I strive to understand and respect that history and to preserve it for future generations. We sometimes neglect the civilization that has been built up through the hard work and achievements of countless people since the dawn of humanity, and act with the arrogance of modern man as if the present is all there is. However, as beings who have a duty to preserve the past and lead the way to a new future, I believe we must always be grateful to those who have brought us to where we are today. Without respect for our ancestors and consideration for future generations, we may come to regard our present lives as all there is, and live as if there were no tomorrow, freely exploiting the Earth’s environment and limited resources.
My way of thinking has sometimes been challenged with the counterargument that we should place more importance on the present, but I believe that we must understand the present based on the past and prepare for the future, and therefore we should not rashly prioritize the present over the past and lead excessively wasteful lifestyles.

Life philosophy

I want to live a life where I respect the history that has carried the legacy of the past into the present, and prepare for the future. Of course, when we compare the past with the present, there are vast differences that make it nearly impossible to understand today’s civilization with the sensibilities of that time. Nevertheless, I believe that we must strive to predict the future as accurately as possible and do everything we can to prepare for the challenges that future generations will face. Just as we have built our present environment based on the achievements of the past.
Just as no living thing can suddenly appear in its developed form without a beginning and a past, we must always be aware of the importance of our present lives in changing the direction of the future, and we must adopt the attitude of a wise captain who knows how to steer the ship in the right direction. This is because our civilization has a duty to serve as the foundation for completing and building the future, and to serve as a stepping stone for the even more distant future.

Motivation for applying and aspirations after joining the company

In the history of architecture, humanity has struggled not only to establish and build living spaces for people to live in, but also to survive and build civilizations since ancient times. I am deeply fascinated by your company’s efforts to make a new mark in the industry by constructing numerous buildings and pursuing innovative designs and functionality, and this has motivated me to apply for this position. I like the fact that you are not simply repeating the values of the past, but are actively reflecting the current situation and new needs of people.
If I am given the opportunity to work at your company, I will strive to create buildings that will remain a part of civilization for a long time to come. If possible, I will work hard to ensure that the buildings I have worked on will remain in history and be recognized by future generations. This is because I am motivated to serve as a bridge between the past and the future, so that my efforts will reach future generations and influence them to develop further. I want the values and traces of the era in which we lived to be passed on to future generations.
