What is social media, and what are its pros and cons, as well as the reasons for its continued powerful influence today?

In this blog post, we’ll examine the concept of social media, the reasons behind its popularity, and its main pros and cons from a contemporary perspective.

Gone are the days when people sent letters to communicate with those far away; now, thanks to wireless internet and smartphones, people can communicate freely with virtually no restrictions of distance or time. While people use various online services—including email and text messaging—to exchange opinions and information, social media stands out as the most representative of these services. Today, social media plays a vital role in a wide range of fields—from information sharing and news consumption to content creation, business, and education—going far beyond mere personal communication. So, let’s take a closer look at what social media is, the factors and characteristics that led to its widespread adoption, and its advantages and disadvantages.
SNS stands for “Social Network Service” and refers to an online platform that creates and maintains social relationships through free communication, information sharing, and the formation and expansion of networks among users. Through these platforms, people can easily see what their offline and online friends are doing and what they’re thinking, and they can also connect with new people who share similar interests. Notable examples of social media include “Facebook,” which gained widespread recognition through the movie ‘The Social Network’; “X” (formerly Twitter), which facilitates real-time communication centered on short posts; “Instagram,” focused on photos and videos; “TikTok,” a short-form video platform; and “Cyworld,” which was once hugely popular in South Korea for its “mini-homepage” service.
One of the main reasons social media has gained popularity among so many people is the widespread adoption of wireless internet and smartphones. In the past, people often had to connect to a wired network to use the internet, but today, thanks to the development of 4G and 5G mobile networks and public Wi-Fi, internet access is readily available in most areas. Furthermore, smartphones have become virtually indispensable in daily life, and South Korea maintains one of the highest smartphone penetration rates and internet usage rates in the world.
As such, the widespread adoption of wireless internet and smartphones has created an environment where people can access the internet whenever and wherever they want. Web-based social media platforms have also become easy and convenient for anyone to use thanks to this environment, allowing people to check updates from those around them and share their daily lives via their smartphones anytime, anywhere. This high level of accessibility and convenience has been a key driving force behind the rapid spread of social media.
So, why do people prefer social media over traditional internet services? The first reason is that the potential for communication between ordinary people and celebrities has greatly expanded. As celebrities from various fields—such as writers, politicians, artists, athletes, and business leaders—manage their own social media accounts, an environment has been created where readers, fans, and supporters can directly leave comments or interact with them. Of course, while it’s not always possible to receive a response to every message, the fact that people can now engage with celebrities’ thoughts and activities from a much closer vantage point than in the past is a major draw for many.
The second reason people prefer social media is its exceptional speed and reach in disseminating information. Just as ripples spread rapidly when a stone is thrown into a calm lake, a single post on social media can reach countless people in a short amount of time. For example, posts spread rapidly through features such as “Repost” on X, “Share” on Facebook, and “Share Story” on Instagram. When Person A shares Person B’s post on their own account, the countless people connected to A can see that post, and as this process repeats, information spreads very quickly.
This high reach also plays a crucial role during disasters or emergencies. In fact, there have been numerous instances where, during natural disasters or accidents, distress calls or on-site updates were rapidly shared via social media, aiding rescue efforts and the dissemination of information. Furthermore, many companies and organizations actively leverage the high reach of social media for product promotion, customer communication, and brand marketing.
However, the exceptional accessibility and reach of social media have also brought about various side effects.
First, constantly being exposed to the daily lives of friends or celebrities on social media can lead people to compare themselves to others. As people are repeatedly exposed to only positive aspects—such as job offers, travel, marriage, and success stories—some may experience feelings of relative deprivation or depression. This phenomenon was commonly referred to as “Facebook depression” and is now understood as a sociopsychological phenomenon that occurs across various social media platforms, not limited to any specific one. Of course, it is important to note that this term is not a medical diagnosis but rather a socially used expression.
Furthermore, the powerful ability of social media to disseminate information also increases the likelihood that misinformation and fake news will spread rapidly. There have been numerous instances where unverified rumors—such as reports of a celebrity’s death, rumors about various crimes, or false information during disasters—have spread rapidly through social media, causing social chaos. Recently, with the emergence of cases where images and videos created using generative AI are circulated as if they were real, the ability to verify the authenticity of information has become even more critical.
So far, we have examined what social media is, how it came to gain such widespread popularity today, and what its advantages and disadvantages are. In today’s information society, social media has established itself as a vital platform that enables rapid communication not only with people nearby but also with diverse individuals around the world, anytime and anywhere. While it plays a positive role in promoting information sharing and social connections, it also carries side effects such as the spread of misinformation, a culture of excessive comparison, and privacy concerns. Therefore, to use social media in a healthy way, not only do platform companies need to operate responsibly and institutional safeguards need to be put in place, but users themselves must also adopt an attitude of critically evaluating information and using it appropriately. Moving forward, social media will continue to evolve alongside new technologies and remain a vital tool that transforms the way people communicate.
