How have smartphones transformed modern society and our daily lives?

January 9, 2007, is widely regarded as the day that ushered in a new era of mobile devices. On that day, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone during a keynote address. The iPhone offered a far wider range of features than the conventional cell phones available on the market at the time, and its scope of use expanded significantly. Before the iPhone’s arrival, people often carried separate devices for making calls and listening to music. However, with the advent of smartphones, a single device became capable of handling not only phone calls but also listening to music, browsing the internet, and watching videos. This transformation attracted significant attention from consumers worldwide. At the time, Samsung and LG also began to respond in earnest to the smartphone market, but they were initially criticized for being somewhat slow to adapt to the market changes. In particular, while LG’s Chocolate phone recorded high sales, it gradually lost its competitiveness as the smartphone market expanded.
Samsung’s “Omnia 2” and Apple’s “iPhone,” both released in late 2009, engaged in full-scale competition in the South Korean smartphone market. Subsequently, the smartphone market expanded beyond mere competition among manufacturers to include competition among operating systems (OS). Currently, the smartphone operating system market is dominated by Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Android is an open-source operating system developed by Google, offering the advantage of being freely usable by various manufacturers. In contrast, Apple’s iOS is known for maintaining a closed ecosystem. Developers must build applications based on the development environment and application programming interfaces (APIs) provided by Apple and cannot modify the operating system itself. This strategy remains in place today, and Apple has secured its competitive edge by building a unique ecosystem that integrates hardware and software.
While consumers consider various factors when purchasing a smartphone, many regard design as one of the most important criteria. Of course, processor performance, the camera, the display, the battery, and the operating system are also important factors, but the overall performance of major smartphones released recently has reached a high, uniform standard. Therefore, users often choose a product by comparing design, user experience, and operating system features among devices with similar performance. In particular, Apple’s iPhone consistently attracts attention with its design changes and high-quality product engineering every time a new model is unveiled.
So, what components make up a smartphone? Although smartphones have become a necessity for modern people, not many people know in detail what hardware is inside them. One of the most basic components of a smartphone is the display. Since it is the part users interact with most frequently, manufacturers are investing heavily in its technology. Currently, most smartphones use capacitive touchscreens. A capacitive touchscreen recognizes input by detecting subtle electrical changes generated by the human body. They offer the advantages of fast response times, excellent durability, and support for multi-touch. Furthermore, as smartphones have evolved, displays have shifted toward using tempered glass instead of plastic. Tempered glass has high light transmittance, exceptional durability, and is relatively scratch-resistant, which has significantly improved the quality of smartphone screens.
Screen response time is a crucial factor when using a smartphone. How quickly the screen responds when a user touches it determines the overall user experience of the smartphone. For this reason, smartphone manufacturers are continuously improving processors to deliver faster performance with each new product release. In modern society, as living standards rise, we find ourselves in an environment where we must handle various tasks and activities in ever-shorter time frames. Amid these changes, the smartphone’s processor plays a pivotal role. If compared to the human body, the processor is akin to the brain. Most of the computations and information processing performed on a smartphone are centered around the processor. Furthermore, the processor significantly influences graphics processing performance. No matter how excellent a display may be, it is difficult to render a smooth and crisp image without a processor capable of fully utilizing it. Recently, with artificial intelligence (AI) computing capabilities integrated into processors, they are playing a crucial role in enhancing the performance of various functions such as photo editing, voice recognition, and real-time translation.
As smartphone adoption has expanded, social networking services (SNS) have also grown rapidly. In the past, it was common for people to exchange text messages, but with the widespread adoption of smartphones, various messaging apps have become established as everyday means of communication. One of the greatest advantages of smartphones is that users can freely install and use a wide variety of apps of their choice. An application refers to a program that runs on a smartphone and, like computer programs, performs various functions. Today, people use messaging services far more frequently than text messages. In particular, “KakaoTalk” has established itself as the most widely used messaging service in South Korea, offering a variety of features such as free text messages, voice calls, video calls, and file sharing. As such, the development of messaging applications has significantly contributed to the decline in the use of traditional text messaging. In fact, many smartphone users rely on messaging services as an essential tool for communicating smoothly with those around them, and these services are considered one of the key factors driving the widespread adoption of smartphones.
The proliferation of smartphones has also had a major impact on the growth of social networking services. Various social media platforms—such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads—are now accessible anytime, anywhere via smartphones, and a culture of sharing daily life and information in real time has taken root. It has become a natural part of daily life to take photos and videos using the smartphone’s built-in camera and post them immediately on social media. While this ease of information sharing is a major advantage, it has also given rise to new social issues such as privacy protection and invasion of privacy. Excessively disclosing one’s location or daily activities carries the risk of exposing personal information, which can lead to crimes, online harassment, and stalking. Therefore, when using smartphones and social media, users must consider not only convenience but also personal data protection and proper digital habits.
Another advantage of smartphones is the ability to access the internet anytime, anywhere via Wi-Fi and mobile networks. While 3G networks were primarily used in the past, the widespread adoption of LTE (Long Term Evolution) has significantly improved data transmission speeds and stability. Today, moving beyond LTE, 5G mobile networks have been commercialized, offering ultra-high-speed data transmission and low latency, and serving as the foundation for various services such as artificial intelligence, cloud gaming, and high-definition video streaming. Furthermore, in some countries, research and standardization efforts for next-generation 6G technology—beyond 5G—are actively underway. Advances in mobile communication technology, along with improvements in smartphone performance, are serving as a crucial foundation for enabling a wide range of digital services.
As such, smartphones are essential devices in modern society, equipped with a wide range of functions. However, no matter how advanced their features may be, if users cannot utilize them properly, they are not much different from ordinary cell phones. While smartphones undoubtedly make daily life more convenient, there are still many cases where users rely solely on calling and texting functions. If you purchase a smartphone simply to show it off to those around you, you are not fully realizing its value. A smartphone is a tool that helps users search for information, learn, perform work tasks, and communicate with a wide range of people. Therefore, it is advisable for users to fully understand not only the smartphone’s basic functions but also the features of its operating system and the capabilities of the apps they frequently use before selecting a device that suits their specific needs. The value and scope of a smartphone’s use can vary significantly depending on how intelligently it is utilized.
