How did paleoclimatology uncover the causes of the Maya civilization’s collapse?

In this blog post, we’ll examine the causes of the Maya civilization’s collapse as revealed by paleoclimatological research, and explore how climate change influenced the rise and fall of civilizations.

 

Most civilizations around the world emerged near major rivers, on vast plains, and under favorable climatic conditions. The Mesopotamian civilization developed in the basins of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. Interestingly, however, the Maya civilization is an exception. It originated in the tropical rainforests of Central America. The tropical rainforests of Central America, with their high temperatures, humidity, and dense jungle environment, are ideal breeding grounds for various infectious diseases and pests. Even today, it is a challenging environment for large populations to inhabit, yet archaeological research has revealed that a brilliant civilization once thrived in this region.
Given these geographical conditions, the Maya civilization was remarkably advanced—to the point of being almost unbelievable. The Maya developed a culture of record-keeping by carving hieroglyphs onto stone slabs and even produced books using plaster and tree bark. They also possessed exceptional architectural skills, leaving behind numerous large-scale structures such as palaces, pyramids, and temples. Millions of people practiced agriculture supported by irrigation systems; this enabled self-sufficiency, allowing populations comparable in size to modern cities to live in dense communities. Astronomy also advanced significantly; they predicted solar and lunar eclipses, observed the movements of the stars, and calculated the solar year to be approximately 365.24 days. Furthermore, their mathematics reached such a high level that they are known to have used the concept of the number zero.
Ironically, the reason the Maya civilization was able to grow into such a major civilization was closely related to its harsh climate. The ground in the Maya region consists mostly of limestone, which has the characteristic of not being able to retain water for long periods. Consequently, even when they built facilities such as canals, wells, and reservoirs, it was difficult to store water for extended periods. Because of these environmental conditions, the Maya civilization was highly vulnerable to drought. Since they could not store sufficient water, it was difficult for them to respond effectively to prolonged droughts.
The period during which the Maya civilization flourished coincided with a long-term climate shift, during which a relatively warm and humid environment gradually gave way to a drier one. Since maize—the staple food of the Maya—was a crop heavily dependent on rainfall, a decrease in precipitation had a direct impact on crop yields. Ancient civilizations tended to rely on religion to cope with climate change and natural disasters, and the Maya civilization was no exception, developing a religion centered on the worship of gods of rain and water. Based on these beliefs, a political system rooted in religious authority took shape. The king, regarded as the representative of the rain god, performed rituals to pray for rain; when droughts persisted, the king’s authority weakened, sometimes leading to intensified political conflicts.
The downfall of the Maya civilization, which had enjoyed such prosperity, came suddenly. Before the development of paleoclimatology, various hypotheses were proposed to explain the collapse of the Maya civilization, and even speculations about extraterrestrial intervention emerged. By the time the Spanish arrived in Central America in the 16th century, most of the major Maya cities were already abandoned ruins. All that remained were pyramids overgrown with jungle and cities abandoned by their inhabitants. Archaeologists have cited various factors as causes, including epidemics, the spread of pests, agricultural failures due to soil degradation, conflicts between the ruling class and the ruled, and invasions by foreign peoples.
However, as paleoclimatology advanced, the causes of the Maya civilization’s collapse became clearer. It is now widely accepted that a prolonged period of severe drought was the most significant factor in the collapse of the Maya civilization, and it has also been suggested that social and political unrest, along with environmental degradation, may have contributed to the decline. Researchers reconstructed the climate of that era by analyzing various natural records, including lake sediments near archaeological sites, cave stalagmites, and marine sediment layers. These findings revealed that several severe, prolonged droughts occurred around the 9th century.
Furthermore, a study analyzing lake sediments on the Yucatán Peninsula also identified evidence of large-scale droughts that coincided with the decline of the Maya civilization. Multiple studies indicate that repeated, prolonged droughts occurred between approximately 800 and 1000 CE, demonstrating that this period was closely linked to the rapid decline of the Maya civilization.
The severe droughts around the 9th century dealt a devastating blow to Mayan maize agriculture. Due to the ecological constraints of a humid tropical environment, the Mayan civilization lacked large livestock that could be used for migration and transportation, which limited its ability to transport food over long distances and engage in trade. Consequently, they had no choice but to rely on self-sufficiency through agriculture, and the high population density of their cities actually became a significant burden when food shortages occurred. Ultimately, the prolonged severe drought deepened social and political turmoil and became one of the key factors leading to the collapse of the Maya civilization.
