How can you show your vision beyond the laboratory in your chemistry PhD application essay?

In this blog post, we will introduce how to incorporate your vision that goes beyond the confines of a laboratory and considers social values and industrial applications into your chemistry PhD application essay.

Background

As a child, I was a kid who would ask “why?” about even the smallest things in everyday life, pestering the adults around me with a barrage of questions. Even most of the adults who loved and cared for me were exasperated by my constant questioning, which shows how my curiosity and enthusiasm were extraordinary. My mother was the one who did not dismiss my curiosity and worked hard to help me find answers. She regularly visited the library to find answers to my questions and tried to explain things to me in a way that I could understand. She encouraged me not to think of my curiosity as something strange or something to be ashamed of. She told me that my curiosity was natural for a child who had just encountered the world, and that I should not forget that pure desire and become a talented person who can actively express it even as an adult.
Under my mother’s careful guidance, my enthusiasm did not waver, and I grew up to be a talented person who could always actively express my curiosity. I no longer bombarded people indiscriminately with questions and acted impatiently, but I never turned away from my curiosity or suppressed it just because I had many opportunities to learn. During my school days, I visited the teachers’ room so often that the teachers became familiar with me. Some of my classmates thought I was trying too hard to impress my teachers, but I didn’t let that bother me. I always tried to keep my enthusiasm burning brightly and give my best.

School life

It was a time when I was trying to further develop my curiosity. Rather than simply repeating tasks without questioning the rules and work methods I was given, I was determined to devote myself to research work that would allow me to focus on new discoveries and creativity. I realized at an early age that people are born with different qualities and personalities, and that the values universally pursued and preferred by society cannot be unilaterally applied to me. If the universal norms of society fit well with one’s personality, then it is fine to follow them, but there is no need for people who do not fit in to force themselves to change their habits and personalities.
I have always had a rich curiosity about the world and spent a lot of time trying to satisfy it, but I realized every time that I did not behave in a universal way. However, I always encouraged myself by realizing that this was not a flaw, but rather a quality that would serve as a sufficient foundation for me to navigate a blue ocean that was different from others. I never doubted that finding a path that was different from others would be somewhat difficult, but that my life itself was not wrong. This belief came largely from my mother, who had always supported me since I was a child. She always respected my choices and did her best to give me strength. With her support, I was able to grow into a more enterprising person.

Strengths and weaknesses

I am a person who is always eager to take on new challenges and satisfy my curiosity. Like a climber facing a steep mountain, I may feel fear and frustration when looking up at an intimidating mountain, but once I make the effort to conquer it, I feel an incomparable sense of satisfaction. Similarly, whenever I face a difficult and challenging problem, I feel a strange excitement along with fear. In addition, the more my body suffers and struggles, the more I grow, so I have always been willing to face hardship in order to leap to greater heights. This is because I have always believed that you cannot achieve anything by just staying in one place, and that only those who race breathlessly toward the finish line and finally achieve their goals can leave behind a proper legacy.
This led to me being criticized for being restless and overworking myself, but I found that when I allowed myself to relax, I quickly became impatient and started rushing around, so I made an effort to throw myself into new adventures to further strengthen myself.

Outlook on life

Just as human civilization has slowly advanced through the efforts of countless people, I want to strive to make even small improvements as a member of that civilization. This is because I always strive to achieve something that will not only make people in my generation happy, but also have an impact on future generations. Some may think that my dream is quite big, but I believe it is a reasonable goal for a person to achieve in a lifetime.
I do not want to study solely for my own sake, for success, profit, or happiness. I want to strive to become a person who can think of and serve many people, and continue to grow as a talented individual. I want to work hard in a way that is more humane and benevolent. I will work diligently so that my aspirations do not remain empty words.

Reasons for applying and aspirations

When I was a child, the word “why” was always on my lips. I had an endless curiosity about the world and wanted to understand its principles and grasp its structure. I wanted to satisfy my curiosity by asking the “almighty beings” who were always around me, that is, the many adults around me. Most adults found me cute for a moment, but soon lost interest, so my education was left entirely to my mother, who had patience and perseverance.
However, thanks to my mother’s discipline, which allowed me to continue pursuing my curiosity about the world, even if it meant suffering, and which spread like the roots of a sweet potato vine, I was able to become a talented person who can respond to all phenomena and data in the world with a pure heart. I believe that I am a good fit for your company, which prefers enterprising people with personal interests, curiosity, and independence rather than those who are simply motivated by work, so I decided to apply.
