In this blog post, we will introduce ways to incorporate your practical experience at a patent office or in related work into your cover letter in a specific and professional manner.
Growth
“In this world, there is a system where the person who first comes up with an idea is protected by law.” When I was a child, my father, who loved inventing things, often talked about ‘patents.’ He said that there are laws that protect amazing ideas and new inventions from being stolen, just like they protect other things. When I heard my father’s explanation, the first thing that came to my mind was, “Then can I protect the nicknames I gave my friends at the beginning of the school year with a patent?” They were nicknames that everyone admired and praised me for, saying that they suited my friends perfectly. I also thought of the secret methods I had devised to avoid taking bitter medicine and the tricks I had used on the arcade machines at the stationery store, but when I seriously told my father about them, he smiled wryly and tried his best to explain the requirements for an idea to be patentable.
He even took me with him when he went to file his patent application. Even though he had a regular job, my father never lost his passion for inventions, constantly coming up with new ideas and applying for patents. He had a habit of applying for patents purely as a personal hobby. This did not bring my father instant wealth, but it did provide a regular source of income that supplemented his salary and had a positive effect on our family’s financial situation. My father was always preoccupied with strange ideas, but I found it amazing and strange that his playful hobby could earn money. This naturally led me to become interested in patents.
School life
I wondered if I could come up with new ideas like my father. Those were days of intense thought. At one time, I was confident that I was a child who could come up with new and interesting ideas before my friends, but as I listened to my father’s lectures on patents, I realized that most of the ideas that we commonly come up with have already been thought of by someone else in the past. Feeling somewhat frustrated, I told my father all the ideas that came to mind, but he simply told me that they were all obvious.
Taking my father’s words to heart, that ideas must be remarkable enough to be valued, I wanted to come up with amazing ideas that would be admired by people all over the world, more than I wanted to be noticed by my peers during my teenage years. Unlike other children who feel rivalry toward their peers, I saw everyone who wanted to be at the forefront of humanity as my enemy. In the world of ideas, everyone is on an equal footing, and the fact that my father and I could compete in a friendly rivalry was enough to motivate me even more. I was constantly competitive with people around the world and always tried to stay one step ahead. Rather than trying to change everything at once, my ultimate goal was to make small, millimeter-by-millimeter progress that would eventually add up to a noticeable difference.
Strengths and weaknesses
Like my father, who never overlooked even the smallest ideas or details and always made an effort to review and record everything, I am a person who analyzes and examines every detail meticulously. I still hold dear my father’s philosophy that truly useful ideas and new ways of thinking are often found in the little corners that people don’t usually notice. Just as it is difficult to find something that others have overlooked even if you examine every corner of a busy street that many people have already passed by, you can only discover a narrow alley that no one has ever noticed by looking into narrow alleys that everyone knows exist but has never really looked at.
I am always conscious of the fact that it is not only materials or ideas that are eye-catching or seem plausible that are valuable, but that ideas that originate from small elements can also have a synergistic effect that leads to endless possibilities. However, I often wonder if I am being too cautious in my actions. And even if I respond to each idea meticulously, I always try to be bold in my actions.
Life philosophy
Sometimes, even a life that takes a detour has its own charm. My father had a dream of becoming an inventor since he was young, but due to family circumstances, he had no choice but to find a job quickly and ended up working in a different field for the rest of his life. Even so, he never lost his dream of coming up with ideas and patents, and whenever he had free time, he would immerse himself in his own fun fantasies. As a result, he was able to use his hidden talents to improve our family’s life.
Influenced by my father, I also had a long-held dream of inventing and obtaining patents, but I ended up finding a job that suits my aptitude. However, I am not satisfied with just being an assistant in a patent-related job, and I still have a desire to come up with many ideas on my own. Just as my father fulfilled his lifelong dream outside of his career, I am striving to live each day with the ambition of one day coming up with a truly amazing idea that will surprise the world.
Career
I gained practical experience in the patent department of a company, then moved to a patent office, where I gained extensive experience in related work.
Reason for applying and goals after joining the company
It is easy to think that “patents” and “inventions” are far removed from our daily lives, but I was influenced by my father, who had a hobby of filing patent applications and inventing things since I was a child. I realized that if I could use my creativity to come up with ideas that would contribute to the history and development of humanity, my social status and abilities would not matter, which allowed me to approach the field with an open mind. With my father’s help, I filed a patent application for an idea I came up with, and after experiencing how it led to actual production, I became fascinated with this industry.
The world of ideas is open to everyone, but it is also highly fluid and uncertain, so even if I cannot make patent applications my sole profession, I hope to continue working in a related field. I would like to join your company, which my father praised for providing generous advice and faithful consulting when he was still inexperienced in idea conception and patent-related work. I am confident that my practical early education from my father and my patent-related skills, which I have cultivated over many years, will create a great synergy effect at your company.
