In this blog post, I will introduce how to naturally connect your childhood experiences of being passionate about games to your genuine motivation for applying to Blizzard’s marketing team.
My growth
As a child, I was very interested in games. I even had dreams of becoming a professional gamer, and I showed some skill and talent. However, I was only known locally, and when I realized that there were many players who were far better than me at the national level, I had no choice but to compromise with reality. My parents wanted me to focus on my studies, so they had a hard time trying to keep me from hanging out at PC cafes and my friends’ houses every day. Although I wasn’t good enough to become a professional gamer, I was more talented than most kids when it came to learning and utilizing games, so I spent my days fascinated by most of the games that came out, without caring about my grades.
I wanted to do something related to games. I had that hope since I was a child, but I wasn’t skilled enough to pursue a career in gaming, and even if I wanted to work in a technical field, I didn’t have the necessary technical skills, so I was faced with many conflicts. I often lamented, “Maybe this isn’t the right path for me.” I loved games too much to give up on related fields and live a normal life, but I was also quite indecisive about which field to pursue because of my passion for games. In the end, I compromised by leaving it as a hobby and took a step back, participating in club activities and writing amateur game columns. Living an extremely ordinary life gave me a sense of stability, but it also made me feel a kind of dissatisfaction boiling up from within. I thought that if I continued to live like this, I would be able to live a peaceful life, but it would be a life that was no different from anyone else’s.
School days
I was very interested in games with my friends, so I always went to PC cafes and enjoyed a wide variety of games. My parents were not very happy about my hobby, but that only made me more determined, so I enjoyed my secret pastime while avoiding my parents’ supervision. I enjoyed meeting people from online communities and actively sharing my interests through gaming. However, my delusion that I was the most skilled player was quickly dispelled when I was thoroughly defeated, and I realized that I was just a small fish in a small pond. Looking back, I don’t know how strangers I had never met before could have formed such a close bond, but it was a very enjoyable time for me.
In junior high school, I had a vague career path in mind, wanting to work in the gaming industry or become a professional gamer, but when I entered high school and began preparing for college entrance exams and deciding on a specific major, I realized that I didn’t have the skills to pursue either path, which was a difficult time for me. In order to turn my hobby into a career, I needed the necessary skills, but I was a very realistic person and realized that I didn’t have what it took to convince my parents. After a period of wandering, I ended up choosing a liberal arts major that had nothing to do with games, but I continued to pursue my hobby with steady interest and enthusiasm, and I spared no effort in pursuing my interest in the field that had fascinated me since childhood.
Personality
I am the type of person who tries to find a way to achieve my goals, even if I encounter difficulties in reality. Since I was a child, I wanted to have a job related to games, but I didn’t have the skills to get started in either development or professional gaming, so I gave up for a while, but I never stopped trying. I did not waste my life by ignoring reality and blindly rushing toward my dream, nor did I completely forget my dream and live a life buried in society. Even while making realistic compromises that kept me from moving forward, I had the will to push through the wind and snow. My continued passion and persuasiveness were so strong that even my parents gave up and allowed me to pursue my career path.
My passion for games, which I continued to pursue as a personal hobby by reviewing and analyzing games, made me interested in helping to make games widely known, even if it wasn’t through the skill of creating games myself. I finally discovered what I could do for the games I loved.
Values
Don’t give up, even if you have to take a step back in life. Sometimes we become frustrated because we cannot take a straight path toward our goals, and we end up straying onto a completely different path. In life, it is rare for people to have all the necessary foundations and qualities to move forward at full speed toward their interests, but there are times when people become frustrated, thinking that they “have no talent,” and make the extreme decision to leave that field altogether.
However, most of the people who are currently excelling in their fields have gone through their own struggles and hardships, and even when they felt that their goals were temporarily out of reach, they did not give up and ultimately reached where they are today. Life is long, and its end is so vast that we cannot even imagine it. Therefore, even if we experience frustration or failure and feel discouraged, we must believe that these are only minor events that are insignificant in the grand scheme of life, and we must maintain a bold mindset so that we can ultimately reach our goals.
Reasons for applying and aspirations after joining the company
I have always been interested in games and hoped to work in a related field, but I repeatedly experienced frustration when I realized that I was not naturally suited to the work I wanted to do. However, my dream of returning to the game industry like a salmon returning to its birthplace remained strong, and when I entered university and discovered that I had an aptitude for marketing, I began to see a clear path forward for the first time. I am confident that if I can combine my skills with my steady interest in games, I will be able to perform my duties with more passion than anyone else, and I decided to apply to your company, which has the potential to make my gaming dreams come true.
If I am given the opportunity to develop my abilities at your company, I will strive to reveal and appeal your potential not only to the current generation of gamers but also to various other groups, based on the deep understanding and interest I have gained from playing your games since childhood. I will pursue proactive marketing strategies that go beyond simply maintaining the status quo. In order to constantly adapt to changing times and survive against the waves, it is more important to break through the surface and actively explore new markets than to simply be eroded by the waves.
